The city’s Skimmer Festival Weekend will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 15-16.

On Saturday, the festival will start with the annual Skimmer Seaside Market along Sea Isle's oceanfront Promenade, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market will feature nearly 400 vendors.

A Skimmer Food Court will be located in front of Excursion Park, JFK Boulevard and Pleasure Avenue. There will be live music by Second 2 None in Excursion Park and free family activities, including a giant obstacle course, a moon bounce, face-painters, “Waxy Hands” and a family photo booth. There will also be a “Sand Art” station, where children can create souvenirs for a small fee.

Also on Saturday, the festival’s annual Sand Sculpting Demonstration will take place on the beach at JFK Boulevard beginning at 9 a.m., led by Sand Pounders Professional Sculptors. The public will be invited to compete in a sand sculpting competition. The competition will be followed by an award ceremony at noon, at which time trophies will be distributed to the best amateur sand creations.

There will be more free music at 8 p.m. when The Exceptions perform a variety of pop and rock classics at the Excursion Park Band Shell.

Skimmer Weekend will continue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, with an antique auto show along the Promenade between 29th Street and JFK Boulevard. The Snake Brothers Band will play blue grass music on the Promenade at JFK Boulevard.

This week, engineers proposed building a $13.2 million new city hall building. This will replace the current public safety building on JFK Boulevard, which will hold both city offices, the fire department and the police department.

The proposed four-story building was deemed necessary by City Council after the city's two current government complexes were both significantly damaged during Hurricane Sandy. Tuesday's meeting was held in the city's modified elementary school, where city offices and police have been stationed since the storm. Officials said building a new city hall would be more efficient long-term than staying in the school or fixing the city's damaged current buildings. Engineers said they have been planning this project for months, and had already been analyzing city facilities prior to Sandy. The old buildings were cramped and inefficient, with access and space limitations, engineers said. City Administrator George Savastano said the administration will seek approval at the next council meeting to proceed with creating construction specifications and then seek bids on the work in or around October.
